تدور أحداث القصة في قرية صغيرة جبلية تدعى فيرميليو في الأيام الأخيرة من الحرب العالمية الثانية، حيث تتكشف سلسلة من الأحداث الدرامية والهامة بعد وصول جندي صقلي صامت يختبئ في المدينة بعد هروبه من الجيش. وأثناء وجوده هناك، يطور الجندي علاقة رومانسية مع ابنة عائلة إقليمية كبرى لها.
