تلتقي فيرونيكا وبوريس في موسكو قبل الحرب العالمية الثانية بقليل. وأثناء سيرهم على طول النهر، يشاهدون طيور الكركي تحلق فوقهم، ويعدون باللقاء قبل أن يغادر بوريس للقتال. بوريس يفوت الاجتماع ويتوجه إلى الخطوط الأمامية، بينما تنتظر فيرونيكا بصبر، ترسل رسائل بإخلاص. بعد قصف منزلها، تنتقل فيرونيكا للعيش مع عائلة بوريس، برفقة ابن عم له نواياه الخاصة.
