يظهر كاهن عديم الخبرة ومريض في مجتمع أمبريكور الريفي الفرنسي، حيث ينضم إلى رجال الدين في المجتمع. لكن السكان المحليين لا يحبون الكاهن، وطرقه الزاهدة وسلوكه غير الاجتماعي تجعله منبوذا. خلال دراسته للكتاب المقدس في مدرسة البنات القريبة، يسخر منه طالباته باستمرار. ثم تتحول محاولته للتدخل في نزاع عائلي إلى فضيحة. إخفاقاته، إلى جانب تدهور صحته، بدأت في تآكل إيمانه.
