عندما يعود المتقاعد المسن أومبرتو دومينيكو فيراري إلى منزله الداخلي بعد احتجاج يطالب بزيادة معاشات التقاعد، تطالب صاحبة المنزل بإيجار 15,000 ليرة بحلول نهاية الشهر وإلا سيتم طرده هو وكلبه الصغير إلى الشارع. وبسبب عدم قدرته على الحصول على المال في الوقت المناسب، يتظاهر أومبرتو بالمرض ليرسل إلى المستشفى، ويسلم كلبه المحبوب لخادمة صاحبة المنزل الحامل والمتروك للحفاظ عليه مؤقتا.
