تعود سفينة الاستكشاف يو إس إس بالومينو إلى الأرض بعد بحث عقيم دام 18 شهرا عن حياة فضائية، عندما يصادف الطاقم سفينة يفترض أنها مفقودة، يو إس إس سيغنوس، تحوم بالقرب من ثقب أسود. السفينة يتحكم بها الدكتور هانز راينهارت ورفيقه الآلي الوحشي، لكن الدهشة والدهشة الأولية التي يشعر بها طاقم بالومينو تجاه السفينة ومقاومتها لقوة الثقب الأسود تتحول إلى رعب مع اكتشافهم لخطط راينهارت.
