في عام 2007، شهدت العلوم الأساسية على الأرض اضطرابات غامضة، مما أثار الذعر في الأوساط العلمية. انتحار علماء غامض، عدادات تنازلية أشبه بالمعجزات، منظمة سرية تُدعى "حدود العلم"، ولعبة غامضة تُسمى "لعبة الأجسام الثلاثة" (三体). العالم في مجال النانو "وانغ مياو" يُقاد من قبل المحقق "شي تشيانغ" إلى مركز عمليات مشترك، حيث يتسلل إلى منظمة "حدود العلم" للمساعدة في التحقيق. وسط الضبابية، يكتشف "وانغ مياو" منظمة تُدعى ETO، ويُفاجأ بأن قائدتها الخفية هي "يه ون جيه" — والدة العالمة "يانغ دونغ" التي انتحرت. مع تصاعد المواجهات بين منظمة ETO ومركز العمليات، يكتشف "وانغ مياو" و"شي تشيانغ" أن عالم لعبة "الأجسام الثلاثة" حقيقي. كل هذه الأحداث تنبع من صراع وجودي بين حضارتين تسعيان للبقاء. بجهود مركز العمليات والعلماء، يعيد "وانغ مياو" و"شي تشيانغ" إشعال الأمل، ويستعدان لمواجهة غزو كائنات "الأجسام الثلاثة" (三体人) في معركة مصيرية.
