Stanovnici planete Thundera evakuišu se neposredno prije nego što je planeta uništena. Progonila ih je grupa mutanata. Svi osim jednog njihovog broda za bijeg su uništeni. Ostala je samo mala grupa Thunderana (Thundercats). Sa samo pola snage motora, grupa koju je predvodio Jaga morala je postaviti kurs prema najbližoj planeti. Jaga je komandovao njihovim brodom dok su ostalih sedam bili u stazis cijevima. Jaga je poginuo na njihovom putu do Treće Zemlje, a njihov brod se tamo srušio. Ubrzo su se sprijateljili s raznim grupama u tom području i dizajnirali tvrđavu. Mumm-Ra, stoljećima staro utjelovljenje zla, zajedno s mutantima koji su uništili ostatak Thunderana, stalna je prijetnja. Ali Lion-O, novi vođa Thundercatsa, sa svojim oružjem "Mačem Omensa" pomoći će Thundercatsima da imaju stalnu šansu.
