Rješavanje zločina samo je pitanje vremena. 1973. bila je godina stepenasto šišane kose, afro-frizura, trapezica i glam-rocka. To je također bila godina u kojoj je David Bowie zasjeo na treće mjesto glazbenih ljestvica s Life on Mars. John Simm glavna je zvijezda ove brze i neizvjesne kriminalističke serije s preokretom. Pametan, razuman i pronicav detektiv Sam jedan je od vodećih u svojoj profesiji. Frajer je, smiren i sabran. Sam ima potpunu kontrolu nad svojim poslom, životom i međuljudskim odnosima. Sve dok mu se svijet ne okrene naglavačke i dok se lov na hladnokrvnog ubojicu ne pretvori u očajničko spašavanje vlastite djevojke i kolegice Maye. Nakon umalo smrtonosne automobilske nesreće, Sam se neobjašnjivo prebaci u 1973. - samo četiri godine nakon svoga rođenja. Zbunjen novim i starinskim okruženjem, nestrpljivo se pokušava vratiti u sadašnjost, ali bezuspješno. Prestrašeni Sam mora se pomiriti s novom okolinom, što uključuje povratak u djetinjstvo i posjećivanje vlastite majke u pokušaju da popravi njihov odnos. No Sam katkada izgubi iz vida povratak u sadašnjost. Nešto izvan njegove kontrole drži ga u ovom vremenu. Policija iz prošlosti treba njegovu pomoć u rješavanju paralelnoga zločina. Može li Sam nadići njihove nesofisticirane metode i nedostatak forenzičke opreme koji ga dovode do ludila kako bi uhvatio ubojicu? Hoće li se uspjeti vratiti u 2005. i naći Mayu? Je li Sam poludio? Je li u komi ili se zbilja vratio u prošlost?
