Touma Kamijou je učenik koji živi u Academy Cityju, visoko naprednom mjestu u pogledu tehnologije. Iako je ocijenjen kao esper na nultom nivou (bez moći), na desnoj ruci posjeduje Imagine Breaker, sposobnost koja poništava svaku moć. Touma pronalazi mladu djevojku po imenu Index koja pokušava pobjeći od Necessariusa, moćne magične organizacije čiji je član. Blagoslovljena vještinom pamćenja bilo kakvih informacija, u glavi drži 103.000 zabranjenih magičnih knjiga.
