Naučnik Bill Masen (Dougray Scott) je posvetio svoj život studiji o kompleksnoj biljci trifid. Ove genetski modificirane biljke se masovno proizvede te su nevjerojatan izvor energije i goriva. Bill unatoč njihovom značaju primjeti promjene te shvati kako su trifidi počeli komunicirati. U međuvremenu gomile ljudi okupljaju se diljem svijeta kako bi dočekali dugo očekivanu sunčnu oluju. No taj spektakl oslijepi sve promatrače te se svijet strmoglavi u haos.
Prava noćna mora tek stiže, jer trifide su jako gladne i krenule su prema gradu. Bill je uspio izbjeći katastrofu i sljepilo te se udruži s novinarkom Jo Playton (Joely Richardson). Tada naiđu na Torrencea, amoralnog oportunista, koji želi iskoristi situaciju sveopšteg haosa kako bi slabe i oslijepljene građane podredio svojoj autokratskoj vladi.
