Penzionisani Teksasovi redžeri Gus McRae i Woodrow Call su zadovoljni da žive svoje preostale godine u Teksasu, u malom gradu Lonesome Dove. Tada dolazi njihov stari prijatelj Jake u grad, i govori im o neverovatnoj mogućnosti za uzgajanje goveda u Montani. Ohrabreni ovim, Call uverava Gusa i mnoge druge građane da idu na put do Montane. Gas je ipak imao drugi cilj. Njegova bivša ljubav živi u Nebraski i tada dobija nadu da će mu ona pružiti drugu šansu.
