Oreki Houtarou je minimalistički srednjoškolac. Jednog dana, na zahtjev svoje starije sestre, pridružuje se Klubu klasične književnosti. Tamo upoznaje Chitandu Eru, Fukube Satoshija i Ibaru Mayaku. Chitanda je smirena, lijepa djevojka, ali postaje oličenje radoznalosti kad kaže: "Zanima me." Fukube je nasmijani dječak sa fantastičnim pamćenjem koji sebe naziva bazom podataka. Ibara je niska djevojka i stroga je prema drugima i prema sebi. Počinju istraživati slučaj koji se desio prije 45 godina. Naznake misterije zakopane su u staroj zbirci djela bivših članova Klasičnog kluba. Zbirka nosi naziv "Hyouka."
