Neutěšený, meditativní obraz lidské samoty tváří v tvář smrti. Děj snímku se odehrává koncem 19. století. Dvě zámožné sestry (Ingrid Thulinová a Liv Ullmannová) přijíždějí na rodinný statek, aby se svou smrtelně nemocnou setrou (Harriet Anderssonová) strávili poslední dny jejího života. Zatímco obě ženy, poznamenány manželstvím a egoismem, nejsou vůči umírající schopny vyvinout citový vztah, nesobecká služebná (Kari Sylwanová), která ji ošetřuje, pečuje o každou její potřebu a poskytuje jí čistou, bezmeznou lásku.
Kruté a zároveň utěšující Šepoty a výkřiky odhalují složitou krajinu lidského utrpení, žalu a soucitu, kterou svým neobyčejným výkonem oživují Bergmanovi osvědčení herci.
Film získal mnoho zahraničních poct, nejvyšší ocenění Švédského filmového ústavu za rok 1973, dále Oscara za kameru (S. Nykvist) a Cenu Nejvyšší technické komise na MFF v Cannes 1973.
