Třicátá léta. Právě osiřelá devítiletá Addie (Tatum O'Nealová) se přidá k matčinu dávnému příteli, podvodníčkovi Mozesu Prayovi (Ryan O'Neal). Ten se živí podomním prodejem biblí, které svým zákazníkům rafinovaně vnucuje. Mozes má Addii jen odvézt k její tetě ve vzdáleném městě, avšak po cestě zjistí, že svérázná dívenka má kromobyčejný talent zapůsobit na jeho zákazníky.
