Britský důlní inženýr Richard Hannay se vrátil na krátkou dobu z Afriky do Londýna, aby zde přišel na jiné myšlenky. Společenský život ho ale nudí, rád by zažil něco vzrušujícího. Brzy se mu k tomu naskytne příležitost, když do jeho bytu vtrhne tajný agent Scudder a svěří mu notes se zakódovanými informacemi. Brzy po tom Hannaye pronásledují němečtí agenti a britská policie. Když se ve snaze zachránit vydá na předvolební schůzi za liberála, pozná politika George Sinclaira a jeho sestru, sufražetku Viktorii. Z Hannaye se nečekaně stane vlastenec, kterému záleží na bezpečí své země. Podaří se mu včas rozluštit kód v zápisníku a dokáže zastavit plány nepřátel, kteří chystají velké spiknutí?
