Herečka Nikki Grace se připravuje na největší roli svého života, ale když se zamiluje do svého kolegy, zjistí, že se její život začíná podobat fiktivnímu filmu, který právě točí. Navíc odhaluje, že tento současný film je remakem polského snímku 47, který nebyl nikdy dokončen kvůli nevyslovené tragédii. A to je jen začátek. Brzy se na filmovém plátně rozpoutá zdánlivě nekonečný útok nepopsatelně bizarních situací: sitcom představující lidi v králičích kostýmech, paralelní příběh zasazený do zimního Polska, dům plný tančících prostitutek, šroubováky v břiše… a mnohem, mnohem víc. Snímkem Inland Empire přináší David Lynch svou nejvíce avantgardní, abstraktní a neproniknutelnou vizi v celé své kariéře. Tříhodinová horečná noční můra hraného filmu bere základní strukturu Mulholland Drive a ještě více ji činí neovladatelnou.
