Po devatenácti letech bojů mezi Autoboty a Decepticony na Zemi se tato válka opět přesouvá na jejich domovskou planetu Cybertron. Tu se Decepticonům podářilo dobít a tak se Autoboti ukrývají na jednom ze Cybertronských měsíců a plánují útok. To však ale ještě netuší, že zanedlouho budou mít co dočinění s mnohem silnějším nepřítelem, než jsou všichni Decepticoni dohromady. K Cybertronu se totiž blíží Unicron (Orson Welles), zlé dvojče stvořitele všech Transformerů Primuse a chce zničit a pohltit celý Cybertron. Autoboti a Decepticoni, odvjevěcí nepřátelé na život a na smrt, se tak musí spojit, aby ochránili svou domovskou planetu i svoje vlastní životy. Transformers: The Movie navazuje na animovaný seriál Transformers z roku 1984, který vychází z populární série stejnojmených hraček.
