Příběh se odehrává ve válkou zničené Čečně. 12 porotců bojuje s rozhodnutím o osudu čečenského teenagera, který údajně zabil svého ruského otčíma. Porotci: rasistický taxikář, nedůvěřivý lékař, nerozhodný televizní producent, člověk, který přežil holocaust, vášnivý muzikant, ředitel hřbitova a další reprezentují rozpolcenou společnost současného Ruska. Film byl nominován na Oscara za nejlepší zahraniční film, na Zlatého lva na Mezinárodním filmovém festivalu v Benátkách a byl součástí Mezinárodního filmového festivalu v Karlových Varech. Režisér Nikita Michalkov patří mezi špičky ve svém oboru a jeho dalšími filmy jsou např. Lazebník sibiřský nebo Unaveni sluncem.
