Na začátku příbehu je vražda primátora a jeho protikandidáta. Pověřeni vyšetřováním jsou agenti FBI Archer a Driverová. Postupným rozmotáváním spletitého klubka lží a polopravd zjišťují, že radnice města skrýva omnoho víc, než jen jméno vraha. Všechno se ještě více zkomplikuje, když svou kandidatúru ohlásí bývalý nejbližší spolupracovník primátora. Agent Archer navíc odhalí tíživé rodinné tajemství, za kterým stojí jeho matka viceprimátorka Elizabeth Archerová. Zezačátku nesourodá dvojice agentů postupně zjišťuje, že čelí tajemné, století fungující a mocné organizaci. Z lovců se stanou pronásledovaní. Dokáží nebezpečné dobrodružství přežít a najít toho, kdo za celou konspirací stojí?
