Devítiletý Hodder právě postoupil do třetí třídy. Žije jen s tatínkem, který pracuje jako lepič plakátů. Hodder nemá žádné přátele. Spolužáci si o něm říkají, že je divný. Ale Hodderova představivost mu pomáhá přežít. Když se mu jednou v noci objeví víla a řekne mu, aby zachránil svět, nemůže přece zvládnout celý úkol najednou. Rozhodne se začít na malém ostrově Guambilua na pobřeží Afriky. Začne sestavovat expedici. Požádá své dva spolužáky - nejsilnějšího a nejchytřejšího - aby šli s ním. Oba kluci mu účast na expedici slíbí, ale nemyslí to vážně. Věci se však příliš vyhrotí a Hodder uteče do svého vlastního světa. Když už skoro ztrácí kontakt s reálným životem, nejsilnější kluk ve třídě zjistí, že toho má s Hodderem společného víc, než si myslel.
