V neprozkoumaných prostorách New York City, v obrovském labyrintu tunelů a jeskyň, živoří celé kolonie bezdomovců a "ztracených" lidí. Najednou se začnou objevovat zprávy, že vláda Spojených států v zoufalém pokusu pomoci v havarijním stavu nukleárního průmyslu uvažuje o plánu uskladnit radioaktivní odpad právě do těchto podzemních chodeb. Jejich obyvatelé jsou posléze vystaveni obrovské dávce radioaktivního záření a jeho působením se změní na C.H.U.D - Canibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers (kanibalistické humanoidní podzemní obyvatele). A tito mutanti se začnou živit obyvateli New Yorku...
