Mimozemšťanka Mila se stává dobrovolnicí, která se rozhodla navštívit planetu Zemi. Nikomu jinému se na ni na rozdíl od jiných planet letět nechce, protože Země je hrozná, ale přece jen už je to dvě stě let, co byla navštívená naposledy, takže by se tam někdo měl podívat. Mila proto přilétá do Paříže, a jediné, co má u sebe, jsou batikované šaty. Pomalu se začíná seznamovat s prapodivnou současnou společností, ve které se musí platit podivnými papírky, jídlo se nedá jíst, vzduch dýchat, každý je nemocný, ženy musejí používat jakési „rtěnky", bez kterých by na ně ostatní lidé nebyli hodní.
