Timbuktu zcela ztichlo, ulice jsou prázdné, dveře domů zavřené, sousedé se neschází na besedu, dokonce je zakázáno kouřit. Nedaleko města ovládaného skupinou islámských fundamentalistů žije poklidně na dunách Kidane s ženou Satimou, dcerou Toyou a 12letým Issanem, který se stará o stádo krav. Zdánlivý klid jejich života je narušen ve chvíli, kdy Kidane omylem zabije rybáře Amadoua a musí čelit nově zavedeným pravidlům. Ve vizuálně uhrančivém a sugestivním filmu zvolil Sissako svébytný styl vyprávění, ve kterém mísí absurdní humor s tragickými momenty.
