Stárnoucí Calvero, kdysi všemi obdivovaný klaun, se pokouší vyrovnat s tím, že má svá nejlepší léta za sebou. Jednoho dne zachrání mladou tanečnici Terry, která si chtěla vzít život, a nastěhuje ji k sobě. Péče o ni náhle opět dodává smysl jeho životu. Vrací jí sebevědomí a obstará jí divadelní angažmá.
