Catherine Deneuve hraje královnu imaginární východoevropské země. Její manžel zemřel a země zůstává bez krále. Podle zákonů království musí být následník trůnu ženatý. Jejich nejstarší syn je však stále svobodný, a proto na trůn nastupuje jeho méně zodpovědný bratr Arnaud. To matince ani tak nevadí. Její problém je Arnaudova žena Armelle, velice nevýrazná paní.
