Dorian Lagatos (Michael McMillian) žije s rodinou na americkém maloměstě. Tápání během vlastního dospívání dostává jasný směr v okamžiku, kdy si uvědomí, že je gay. Své tajemství sdělí pouze svému bratru, školní fotbalové hvězdě. Jejich rodině vládne železnou rukou autoritativní otec, obdivovatel Nixona, s vyhraněným černo-bílým viděním světa. Dorian se odhodlává k rozhodujícímu kroku Dorian postupně nachází vnitřní sílu, aby dokázal otci vzdorovat a oznámit mu, že je gay. Otcova reakce je očekávaně negativní. Dorian odchází z domu a pokračuje ve studiích v New Yorku. Teprve zde se před ním otevírá svobodný život. Nachází nové přátele, prožívá svou první lásku a své první velké zklamání. Začíná podléhat sebelítosti, z níž ho vytrhne až příjezd bratra, který u něj hledá oporu ve své vlastní životní zkoušce. A právě v tuto chvíli je zastihne zpráva o otcově smrti.
