Johannes žije společně se svým otcem Ulrikem, vdovcem ve středním věku, v rybářském městečku v severní části Dánska. Vedou poklidný život ovládaný rutinou, v němž si každý hledí své práce na odlišných pozicích v odvětví rybolovu. Ulrik postrádá lásku a něhu ženy, a proto zařídí mladé krásné Filipínce Rositě pobyt v Dánsku - stejně jako to před ním udělala řada dalších mužů z města. Johannes je do celé záležitosti neochotně zatažen jako překladatel. Jenže v průběhu následujících týdnů to k sobě Johannese s Rositou přitahuje stále víc, což mladíka donutí převzít odpovědnost za svoje sny i budoucnost.
