Blíží se konec války a Němci chvatně opouštějí okupovaná území jižní Francie. Městečko Montauban brzy volně vydechne, ale zatím se po ulicích ještě ozývá střelba a z poražených je cítit vztek a strach. Doktor Julien Dandieu se rozhodne poslat svou milovanou ženu a třináctiletou dceru Claru na venkov, na jejich starý zámeček, stranou od hlavního tahu německých vojsk. Když si ráno přijede pro svou rodinu, čeká ho nevyslovitelná hrůza. A Julien se rozhodne pomstít své blízké.
