Film byl natočen podle komiksového seriálu Flash Gordon populárního ve třicátých letech minulého století. Havárie malého osobního letadla na palubě se známým hráčem amerického fotbalu zadákem Flashem Gordonem a modelkou Dale Ardenovou skončí u šíleného vědce Zarkova, který je zajme a odletí s nimi do vesmíru, kde chce zlikvidovat původce zemské katastrofy. Tím je mocný vesmírný vládce Ming Nemilosrdný, který chce z rozmaru zničit planetu Zemi. Jeho přičiněním začnou vznikat meteoroligické a vesmírné úkazy, které vedou k zániku planety. Právě u něho skončí unesená dvojice hlavních hrdinů včetně doktora Zarkova. Ming si umíní vzít Dale za ženu. Zarkov je donuce postoupit vymazání paměti a Flash je odsouzen k smrti v plynové komoře za napadení císařské stráže. Mingova dcera Aura (Ornella Muti) ale přivede ke svému potěšení Flashe zpátky k životu. Zkáza planety Země se začíná počítat na hodiny a tak má Flash Gordon co dělat.
