Život zestárlého učitele Winfrieda Conradiho uplývá v naprosté rutině, kterou mohutný muž jen občas naruší svou pubertální vášní – drobným žertovným převlekem. Poté, co mu zemře jediný věrný druh, slepý pes, se Winfried rozhodne investovat veškerou pozornost do své odcizené dcery Ines, která dělá kariéru v nadnárodní firmě a nemá na nic a na nikoho čas. Po naprostém fiasku první návštěvy v Bukurešti mění Winfried strategii – čeho nemůže dosáhnout jako neúspěšný otec, toho může docílit jeho neforemné alter-ego. A tak se rodí životní kouč–německý ambasador Toni Erdmann, tragikomická figura s absurdní parukou a umělými zuby, která se workoholičce Ines začne plést do života v těch nejméně vhodných momentech.
