Příbeh se odehrává v Itálii a sleduje prolínající se životy dvou chlapců (a posléze mužů). Jedním je sedlácký levoboček Olmo Dalcò (Gérard Depardieu) a druhým syn majitele velkých pozemků Alfredo Berlinghieri (Robert De Niro). Drama začíná v roce 1900 a končí v roce 1945. Zaměřuje se na vzestup fašizmu, následnou reakci sedláků podporujících komunizmus a na to, jak tyto události formovali osudy dvou hlavních hrdinů.
