Mladá pákistánská obhájkyně Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukherjee) si jako svůj první případ vybere tajemného pilota indické armády Veer Pratap Singha (Shah Rukh Khan), který tráví jíž dvaadvacátý rok v pákistánském vězení. Zachránil totiž kdysi život krásné Pákistánce jménem Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta), do které se okamžitě zamiloval a dokonce ji představil i svým rodičům (Amitabh Bachchan a Hema Malini). Celý jejich vztah se však zkomplikuje příchodem Zaařina snoubence, který se vynasnaží zbavit se Veera za každou cenu. Obhájkyně Saamiya jej ve vězení nejen přesvědčí, aby po dlouhé době konečně promluvil, ale znovuotevřením svého procesu dal též naději na zlepšení vztahů mezi Indií a Pákistánem.
