Film je založen na stejnojmenném románu Kenta Harufa. Děj se odehrává ve fiktivním malém coloradském městě Holt, kde vdovec Louis Waters (Robert Redford) a vdova Addie Moore (Jane Fondová) spolu po desetiletí sousedí, ale téměř se neznají. Jednou v noci Addie navštíví Louise, aby mu navrhla, že spolu stráví noc, aby tak čelili své osamělosti. Přestože Louis zpočátku poněkud váhá, brzy souhlasí a začnou trávit večery a noci v Addieině domě.
