Plachý tokijský student Kaneki Ken jde jednoho dne na své vysněné rande s tichou dívkou, kterou často pozoruje v kavárně, již oba pravidelně navštěvují. Nicméně pro něj se jejich schůzka náhle změní v noční můru. Dívka je totiž ve skutečnosti lidožravý ghúl a Kaneki se právě stal hlavním chodem na jejím jídelníčku. Šťastnou náhodou ale útok děvčete přežije a po probuzení v nemocnici zjišťuje, že se z něj stal také ghúl. Chlapec se nyní musí naučit žít mezi ostatními predátory a zároveň skrývat svou identitu před lidmi, zvláště pak před úřady zabývající se vymýcením ghúlů. (Arigato)
