Film vypráví příběh Javeda, britského teenagera pákistánského původu, který vyrůstá v anglickém městě Luton v roce 1987. Zatímco zemí zmítají rasové nepokoje a závažné hospodářské problémy, Javed píše básně, které jsou pro něj prostředkem k úniku před netolerancí rodného města a zatvrzelostí konzervativního otce. Když mu však spolužák představí hudbu „Šéfa,“ Javed vidí ve Springsteenových silných textech paralelu ke svému bezútěšnému životu. Jakmile Javed objeví prostor pro očistné uvolnění svých potlačovaných snů, začne také nacházet odvahu nechat zaznít svůj jedinečný hlas.
