Obchodnice se starožitnostmi Hélène Aughain (Delphine Seyrig) žije ve francouzské vesnici Boulogne se svým nevlastním synem Bernardem (Jean-Baptiste Thierrée), veteránem z alžírské války. Jednoho dne přijíždí na návštěvu Hélénin bývalý přítel Alfons (Jean-Pierre Kérien). Přiváží s sebou novou milenku Francoise (Nita Kleinová) a také vzpomínky na válku a lásku. Napětí v domě však brzy překročí únosnou mez a žárlivost, chtíč i temná tajemství brzy vyústí v tragédii.
