Když je v hotelovém pokoji nalezena mrtvá mladá dívka, může to vypadat jako sebevražda z nešťastné lásky. Jenže zarputilý inspektor Sweeney se prvním dojmem nenechá odradit a záhy zjišťuje, že píchl do řádně nebezpečného vosího hnízda. Stopa směřující do prominentních kruhů je záhy lemována dalšími nešťastnými náhodami, za které jsou ukryty promyšlené vraždy. Ačkoliv se i sám inspektor ocitne v nebezpečí života, odmítá případ vzdát.
