Jako dítě viděla Meng Li smrt své matky v oblaku popela na jednom z tichomořských ostrovů. Dívka dospěla a šla ve stopách svých rodičů – stala se seismoložkou. Bohužel po této tragické události se vztah s jejím otcem nezlepšil. S týmem vědců přichází Meng Li na tentýž neblahý ostrov, aby nainstalovala nový systém pro sledování vulkanické činnosti. Na úpatí sopky se totiž právě otevírá nové letovisko a majitel společnosti nechce slyšet o potenciálním nebezpečí. Brzy však začne nová erupce a rajský ostrov se promění v ohnivé peklo.
