Kapitán dr. Benjamin Franklin Pierce, zvaný Hawkeye, je s kapitánem dr. Augustusem Bedfordem Forrestem, přezdívaným Duke, převelen do mobilní armádní chirurgické nemocnice MASH 4077. Nemají vůbec vojenskou morálku, neuznávají armádu a rádi si dělají legraci. Ožralství není u nich nic neznámého a sestry si u nich namohou být jisté. Ani jejich velicí plukovník dr. Henry Braymore Blake, ani úředník jednotky desátník Walter Evžen O'Reilly zvaný Radar si s nimi nevědí rady. Přidá se k nim ještě Piercův kamarád kapitán dr. John Francis Xavier McIntyre zvaný Trapper. A ještě pozlobit vrchní sestru majora Margaret O'Hulihanovou, oblíbenou to Šťabajznu, Hrma i poručíka Dishovou a také kněze jednotky Johna Francise Patrika Mulcahyho.
