Bývalá učitelka Dora si přivydělává jako příležitostná písařka na hlavním nádraží v Rio de Janeiru. Jejíma rukama projdou denně desítky dopisů, o jejichž napsání ji žádají lidé, kteří neumějí psát. Jednoho dne ji jedna zákaznice požádá, aby napsala dopis jejímu manželovi a otci chlapce, jehož má s sebou. Chvíli poté se stane Dora svědkem nehody: tuto ženu srazí auto a její synek zůstane na ulici sám. Chlapec se několik dní potuluje po nádraží, až se ho Dora nakonec ujme. Hodlá si přivydělat tím, že ho postoupí pokoutní agentuře obstarávající děti k adopci. Později však pocítí výčitky svědomí, unese chlapce z bytu překupníků a podstoupí s ním cestu za jeho pravým otcem. Ani Dora, ani chlapec nejsou zpočátku nadšeni jeden druhým, ale dlouhé a náročné putování postupně odbourává jejich předsudky a mezi oběma se začíná vytvářet pevné citové pouto...
