Okupovaná Paříž roku 1941. Členové židovské komunity jsou vyzváni, aby se přihlásili úřadům. Zbožný klenotník Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil) se obává nejhoršího a zařídí, aby jeho rodina opustila město. Nabídne svému zaměstnanci Françoisi Mercierovi (Gilles Lellouche), aby se staral o jeho obchod, dokud konflikt neskončí. Haffmannovy vlastní pokusy o útěk jsou však zmařeny a on tak musí požádat svého asistenta o pomoc. Pro oba muže je to velmi riskantní plán, ke kterému je Mercierova žena Blanche (Sara Giraudeau) skeptická. Když se manželé nastěhují do Haffmannova domu, dohoda se změní ve faustovský obchod, který navždy poznamená osudy všech zúčastněných.
