Komediální thriller POMÁHAT A CHRÁNIT se odehrává na západním pobřeží Irska. Policista z malého městečka Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) má konfliktní povahu, zvrácený smysl pro humor, umírající matku, zálibu v prostitutkách a hlavně ho vůbec nezajímá mezinárodní obchod s kokainem, kvůli kterému mu jednoho dne na dveře klepe agent FBI Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle). Víc než aktivnímu řešení případu se Boyle věnuje posmívání a podrývání Everettovy autority, okolnosti mu ale nepřejí. Nejprve jeho nový horlivý parťák zmizí, pak ho začne vydírat jeho nejoblíbenější šlapka a nakonec se ho ¨C podobně jako všechny ostatní členy místní policie ¨C pokusí podplatit samotní pašeráci drog. To už je příliš i pro Boylea, který pochopí, že musí vzít věci konečně do vlastních rukou a jediným člověkem, kterému může věřit, je právě Everett. Vše se schyluje k výbušnému finále.
