Dan píše sloupek do novin, ve kterém radí druhým, jak si nejlépe uspořádat rodinný život. Jeho vlastní tři dcery mu dospívají před očima a on se jim snaží být dobrým otcem i matkou zároveň. Jeho osobní život zůstal od smrti jeho ženy unášen v proudu malých i větších starostí. Jednoho dne se však něco změní. V knihkupectví potká Marii, která ho na první pohled něčím zaujme. Sympatie jsou vzájemné a šťastnému happy endu stojí v cestě už jen Danův bratr Mitch, se kterým Marie čerstvě chodí.
