Příběh mladého lékaře Mortimera Granvilleho (Hugh Dancy) se odehrává ve viktoriánské Anglii. Pokrokovému Mortimerovi vadí, že většina nemocnic ignoruje nejnovější lékařské teorie a výzkumy a nadále léčí pacienty pomocí pijavic a pouštěním žilou. Když ho vyhodí z posledního místa, skončí jako zaměstnanec Dr. Roberta Dalrympleyho (Jonathan Pryce), který se specializuje na léčbu žen trpících "hysterií". Doktor Dalrympley spolu se svým nejlepším přítelem (Rupert Everett) jsou k novým metodám léčení naopak velmi otevření a každý experiment a novinku vítají s nadšením. Společně sestrojí důmyslný nástroj /vibrátor/, který ženám podivuhodně rychle a efektivně umožňuje dosáhnout vytoužené úlevy a klidu...
