Válečný velkofilm od režiséra filmu "Hrdina". V roce 1937 stojí Nanking v přední linii války mezi Čínou a Japonskem. Když útočící japonská císařská armáda obsadí hlavní město Číny, zoufalí civilisté hledají útočistě za zdánlivě ochrannými zdmi západní katedrály. Tady nalezne úkryt i John Miller, uvězněn uprostřed válečného chaosu a následné okupace. Připojí se k němu skupina nevinných školaček a třináct kurtizán, které jsou stejně jako on odhodlány uniknout hrůzám, které se dějí za kostelními zdmi. Nakonec je to hrdinský čin, co vede zdánlivě nesourodou skupinu zpět do boje ve snaze přežít násilí a pronásledování ze strany japonské armády.
