Před čtrnácti lety se jeden muž stal obětí vážné autonehody, při níž ztratil nejen zrak, ale i ženu svého života, Lenu. Tento muž má dvě jména. První je Harry Caine – pseudonym, jenž používá pro literární tvorbu. Druhé je Mateo Blanco – jeho skutečné jméno, jímž se podepisuje pod filmy, které natáčí. Po nehodě se Mateo stává Harrym. Vzhledem k tomu, že už nemůže režírovat filmy, nechá Matea umřít se ženou, kterou miloval. Nyní žije Harry díky psaní scénářů, pomoci své oddané produkční a jejího syna Diega. Rozhodl se žít, aby mohl vyprávět a díky tomu je stále velice aktivní a atraktivní slepec, jemuž se podařilo vyvinout si zbývající smysly tak, že si vše užívá plnými doušky. Ze svého života vymýtil veškeré události, které se staly před léty.
