Francouzské provinční městečko, kde ve škole vládne despotický ředitel. Bojí se ho nejen žáci, ale i vlastní manželka, která se mu se svým nemocným srdcem nedokáže vzepřít. Snad by se i rozvedl, kdyby škola nepatřila jeho manželce. Již nějaký čas však žije otevřeně v milostném vztahu s učitelkou Nicole. K oběma svým „ženám“ se chová přezíravě a krutě. Proto vznikne jejich společný plán na jeho zavraždění, za nímž stojí Nicole.
