Je po II. světové válce, a tři bývalí vojáci se vrací domů, kde žijí jejich rodiny a známí. Seznámí se spolu na palubě přepravního letadla, které letí do jejich města. Al Stephenson (Frederic March) je v civilu bankovní úředník, pilot Fred Derry pracoval před válkou jako barman, a Homer Parrish byl výborný hráč amerického fotbalu. Z války přichází především on ochuzen o obě ruce. O ty přišel při náletu na bitevní loď. Jak se všichni začlení do normálního života po hrůzách z právě prožité války?Po tom, co viděli, po hrůzách se kterými se setkali. Bude to možné?
