Dobrodružné fantasy, které jde napříč více žánry (sci-fi, pohádka, drama, komedie nebo dokonce horor), si zakládá hlavně na vizuálním stylu, který je specialitou tohoto režisérského dua. Hlavním rysem filmu je ponuré středověké město navozující depresivní atmosféru a bizarní scény a postavy. Vše se točí kolem šíleného Kranka, který trpí neschopností snít, a proto využívá malých dětí, aby z nich nasával jejich fantazii. Jeho uměle vytvořený „rodinný“ kruh dále tvoří trpasličí žena, migrénou trpící mozek v akváriu a šest naklonovaných stvořitelů-narkoleptiků (Dominique Pinon). Bizarnost nechybí ani dalším postavám, např. Chobotnici (siamské dvojče) nebo sektě kyklopů s extrémně citlivým sluchem.
