Bernie Tiede byl asistentem ředitele pohřebního ústavu v malém vesnickém městečku Carthage v Texasu a jedním z nejoblíbenějších obyvatel. Vyučoval ve víkendové škole, zpíval v kostelním sboru a vždy byl ochoten nabídnout pomocnou ruku. Bernieho všichni milovali a byli mu vděčni. Takže nebylo pro nikoho překvapením, když se sblížil s Marjorie Nugentovou, bohatou vdovou, která byla známá svou protivnou povahou a patřičným bohatstvím. Bernie s Marjorie často cestoval a vedl také její bankovní účty. Marjorie se časem stala na Berniem a jeho šlechetnosti naprosto závislá a Bernie se snažil plnit její stále narůstající požadavky. Bernie stále řídil její záležitosti a obyvatelé přitom Marjorie po několik měsíců vůbec neviděli. Obyvatelé Carthage byli šokováni, když se dozvěděli, že je Marjorie Nugentová již několik měsíců mrtvá a Bernie Tiede byl obviněn z její vraždy.
